CHAPTER ELEVEN
IN CODYâS ARMS, Taylor felt the sparks that had been dancing between them grow into a flame. Not just a flash, either, but deeply warming, like the long-burning fire beside them.
His kiss was tender and hungry all at the same time, just as sheâd known it would be. But it was more, too. The feelings he evoked came from the deepest, most secret part of her heart, the part she shared with no one.
Eagerly, she kissed him back, letting her hands splay across his hair, exploring the soft-yet-wiry feel of it. His mouth moved on hers in a way that felt completely different from the boys sheâd kissed before. Theyâd all been boysânot that there had been that many of themâcompared to the man that Cody was.
Experienced. He was experienced. He knew what he was doing, kissing her.
Thatâs because heâs kissed so many other women, including your sister.
She loosened her hold on him and started to pull away, but he frowned against her mouth and tugged her back to him. His fingers tangled in her hair, stroking the length of it.
Finally he lifted his head and she opened her eyes. He was right there, his gaze on her in what she could only describe as a loving way. It was more than physical. He was looking into her soul.
Joy and delight and longing pushed her misgivings away. She pulled him back to her, kissing his cheeks and chin, delighting even in the beard stubble that scratched her face. He was into it, too, murmuring words of praise for how pretty she was, his quickened breathing telling her how much he wanted her. Even through their coats, she felt his warmth and pressed closer.
He growled into her hair. âI could lay you down right here and now and...â His words trailed off, but their meaning was clear.
Joy washed over her, as hard and fast as a sudden Chesapeake storm. She shouldnât feel so happy that a man wanted her physically. She should be remembering her values, the things Aunt Katy had taught her about waiting, preferably for marriage, or at least until a heartfelt relationship was assured.
But there had been so little passion in Taylorâs life. Sheâd always been the wholesome, levelheaded, reliable one, the confidante for friends both male and female, consoling them for difficulties in their relationships even though sheâd had limited experience of her own.
Sheâd wished to be the target of someone elseâs intense desire, but it had never happened before. Not, at least, with someone who mattered to her.
Precisely because it mattered, though, she didnât want to play this hand wrong.
The moon went behind the clouds again, dimming the sparkle around them, reminding her that even the most gorgeous moments had to end. Reality had to be faced.
She tugged away, and with obvious reluctance, he let her go.
âI might be in over my head,â she told him. As much as she wanted him, and as much as she wanted to be spontaneous and fiery and passionate, she just wasnât someone who could dive into the physical and consider the consequences later.
